Grameen Bank

Grameen Bank is an unconventional bank. It is the bank of the poor. It is a bank which gives loan to the poor and landless people. Its aim is to improve the condition of the poor people living in the village. Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the founder and managing director of Grameen Bank. Grameen Bank started its journey from Jobra village of Hathazart upazila in chittagong district in 1976. Dr. Yunus wanted to remove poverty and economic disparity. Meanwhile Grameen Bank has spread over 55,000 villages all over the country covering 6.6 million people. Almost 97% of its members are women.The grameen bank gives loan to the women through various centers. Each centre has at least 5-6 groups of workers containing five members each. The members conduct their business though the chairman elected by the group members with the bank. Giving loan to the poor rural women , It has created employment for many people. It is also creating awareness about food and nutrition, health care and sanitation and education amony the poor people. It is providing education loan to the poor but meritorious students. Taking loan from grameen bank many people have come out of poverty. As a recognition of its activities in alleviating poverty, Grameen bank and Dr. Yunus were awarded Nobel prize jointly for peace in 2006. People believe that Grameen bank will continue its forward march to alleviate poverty of many people in the coming days.
